What does employee turnover really cost?
SHRM and Gallup research puts the fully-loaded cost of losing an employee at 50–200% of their annual salary, depending on role complexity and seniority. This calculator makes that number concrete. It combines the standard turnover rate formula — separations divided by average headcount — with the five cost buckets that drive the dollar figure: recruiting spend and interview time, onboarding and training hours, productivity lost while a replacement ramps up, the vacancy cost of an empty seat, and the knowledge loss and team disruption a departure leaves behind. Change any variable and the annual bill updates instantly, so you can see exactly what a retention program is worth before you fund it.
Frequently asked questions
Divide the number of employees who left during a period by the average headcount for that period, then multiply by 100. Average headcount is (starting headcount + ending headcount) ÷ 2. Example: 30 departures with an average headcount of 210 = 14.3% turnover.
